FIRST FRIDAY | NICOLE WOODLING

Nicole Woodling is a Santa Cruz–based artist and landscape designer whose work is inspired by the intersection of art, ecology, and science. Drawing on a background in environmental science and conservation biology, along with formal training in art and design, she creates both evocative paintings and sustainable outdoor spaces that deepen people’s connection to the natural world.

Nicole’s paintings capture local landscapes and scenes through plein air encaustic and watercolor techniques. Encaustic painting, often called “hot wax painting”, is an ancient medium dating back to the fifth century BCE. Pigments are blended into molten beeswax, layered onto a rigid surface, and fused with a blowtorch. The process creates luminous works with remarkable texture, richness, and depth.

Because bees are essential to both ecosystems and humanity, Nicole views encaustic painting as a meditation on the interconnectedness of all of life- ecologically, physically and spiritually.
