Honolulu-based artist Kris Goto brings island life to life—one meticulously inked line at a time. Her prints blend manga-inspired detail with breezy Hawaiian surrealism, where waves curl like dreams and characters float through scenes that feel both familiar and fantastical. A little local, a little global, and totally unforgettable.
Backside" was inspired by strong powerful waves like Pipline or even Teauhopoo, Tahiti. This is one of the pieces from the Red Umbrellas series. It is inspired by the umbrella - symbolic of an essential aspect of an individual and how important it is to hold on to them. The reality is some lose theirs, some don't. It is also inspired by the first time the artist got to be in the barrel and how she couldn't see anything because the water was splashing into her eyes too much - how she wished for an umbrella then!
