Mark Poulin turns his sketchbook drawing of cat into a small piece of wearable art in sterling silver and enamel. A longtime Artisans & agency artist, Mark has been making jewelry in Northern California since the 1990s, after the Loma Prieta earthquake destroyed his Oakland ceramics studio and pushed his work in a new direction.
For his enamel work, Mark carves the original setting in wax, casts it in sterling silver, and builds color with vitreous enamel fired at 1400°F in four separate firings. An illustration from his sketchbook is then screen-printed in enamel and fired onto the surface for a durable, vivid finish.
