Sometimes the most interesting art is the art that wasn’t planned.

Santa Cruz artist Doug Ross created fine art silkscreen prints from his home studio beginning in 2005, drawing on a background in graphic design and illustration for national publications. His experience in commercial image-making brought technical precision to his printmaking, while his experimenting in his studio opened the door to unexpected moments in the process.

For this First Friday exhibition, we’re showcasing some of those moments!

Studio Overprints are working sheets used during the silkscreen process—paper printed on again and again while testing colors, aligning screens, or preparing different editions. Images overlap, colors collide, and pieces from completely different prints unexpectedly meet.

What began as part of the process becomes something entirely its own. These one-of-a-kind pieces show the wonderfully unpredictable side of printmaking and could never be planned or repeated.

We’re excited to share them!
